on July 3rd 2017 he was good enough to be awarded a new 2-yr contract (and confirmed as Club Captain) but that by Aug 26th he was so rubbish that he was never to be in a starting X1 again?

With the same two individuals making both decisions.

That seems far-fetched to me.
