We would need to improve the defence
The problem with your it 'doesnt matter if we go down' logic (and fwiw I broadly agree) is that the manner of the fight does matter. If we are simply the whipping boys all season then our young players aren't going to learn much, and may even be set back in their progress.
So for the good of the long term future I think we need to be competitive and that's going to require reinforcement.
