Is really the problem and why it’s a mess. It’s really the problem with all the trial by media stuff that goes on these days and I’m not sure that we as a society know quite how to deal with it and square the circle.

It’s entirely right that people who have suffered abuse are not deterred from coming forward and feel able to come forward and that their claims will e taken seriously but by the same token it’s also not fair for people’s lives to be ruined by uncorroborated claims which have not even been investigated or tried as matters of law which seems to have become the trend. I don’t really know what the answer is but I have a real sense of unease about the way we seem to have moved away from the basic presumption of innocent until proven guilty in recent times.

As a caveat to the above I’m not siding with one or other party in this whole Kavanaugh affair. For what it’s worth I thought she seemed credible but there are also very credible sounding liars and fantasists about just as there are people who appear nice and upstanding yet commit crimes. What I do thin though is that if serous allegations have been made it should have been passed to and investigated by the police/FBI immediately and before all this public debate.
