The perceived wisdom is that some of our current problems stem from it brings ‘new’ team and compare with say Lambert coming in to a more established one. Yet even allowing for the financially-driven outgoings and budget replacements, this is a team that has been planned since the arrival of W and F. (On the basis that there didn’t seem to be any belief that last season was going to be anything other than regroup and rebuild) And has now had a full season to think about how they should develop the team that they have chosen and built. How does this stack up? Was three at the back last season an experiment with no learnings?
It feels to me that we are running the experiments but not actually reaching conclusions and not refining anything as a result. The only exception is that we seem to have recognised a more positive attacking approach is needed but we don’t seem terribly sure how that works.
This is why I can’t feel optimistic. I’m not writing anything off after five games; I would like to see some evidence that we know how to correct errors and build on the positives both within games and between games.
Having said all this I’d recommend a textbook 50p on automatic promotion.
