Rome is great, for obvious reasons. Florence is amazing. Venice is utterly unique (and it doesn't smell). Milan is a brilliant city. Then there's the countryside - hilltop towns and villages in Tuscany and Emiglia Romana, the area south of Rome, like Rocca di Papa and Nemi and Castelgandolfo (sp?), and then there's the Alps and Dolomites, and the coast with brilliant beaches. I haven't mentioned Sicily and Sardinia yet, because I haven't been there but they're supposed to be fantastic. Wine, food, coffee, history...
Spend a year there.
