Isn't there a bit of both though

Of course Maddison would have been first choice this season, and there's probably a nice Venn diagram of those calling for Maddison to have been more involved last season and those demanding for Wes to feature in every game. I don't think Farke is above criticism - there have been occasions when a creative substitution may have been effective, and also Maddison has had the odd quite moment when that substitution may have helped both. I don't think I'm handwringing - just sorry that in a very dull season we've not seen someone who is never a dull player. And my hands are totally unwrung.
