How many times do you see defenders grabbing shirts, arm round neck, pulling arms, sly little nudges? Loads and loads. Some defenders made a career out of it (Engerlands John Terry). And because they play for big clubs, with baying crowds and managers all over the press, they got away with it by and large. All while their attacking colleagues go down at the first sign of “contact” which they often manufacture themselves. In the main, this creates massive benefit to the big clubs who get the overwhelming majority of decisions in their favour.
VAR will change all of that. Giant shirt pull in he box every time? Will soon stop when the penalties keep getting given. Once the system is ironed out, reputations will be made and lost. For a few weeks it will be carnage. Then everyone will adapt and the game will change. For the better if you ask me.
