this is an interesting debate

and i don't agree with your assessment of us in the premiership- i certainly don't believe our tactics were to 'lump it up to a big man' . if anything, i think we tried to play pretty passing football too much, when the players we had in key positions were just not up to the job at that level. combine that with the manager's reluctance to drop said underperformers and we became a soft touch. the same goes for the year we went up- 'lump it up to a very fast man', maybe, but not to a big man.
i know neil adams gets a bad press on here for whatever reason, but he reckons that the best way for us to play is to mix it a bit, ie pass it through midfield sometimes, and play the long ball others.
it remains true that most goals, at whatever level, are scored from the more direct ('lump it') approach

as for sunderland- haven't seen them play a full 90 mins, so couldn't comment.
however, if i had to make a guess as to why they have done so poorly while wh and wigan are in the top 1/2, i would say it's down to one thing- m o n e y
