But must be even more so for Sunderland - how many points did they finish ahead of everyone last season?

And why is it that the last two championship winners have failed so dismally?

Clearest connection I can see is that they were both managed by old-school managers who think the way to win games is lump it up to a big man. Good enough for the championship, if you have the right players - not good enough for the prem.
