... registration period runs out. ANd then the registrant gets first dibs on renewal.
What a load of comapnies have done is spend a stack of money on registering domains, with the sole intention of selling them on at a profit.
I read a couple of years ago that something liek 99.9% of dictionary words had already been registered.
As an example you might want to register bigblackears.com. Now, if I'd anticipated a demand for that domain-name I might have registered it in advance, and when you go to bigblackears.com I've whacked up a big sign saying "if you want this domain name it's yours for #OODLES.00p".
The point being, why spend #OODLES.00p to some rip off merchant when you might be able to get something similar like bigfluffyears.com for #25 for two years.
You get me, blood?
