I think the problem...

is not that we look for a long pass first but there is rarely a short pass available. This is because we play with a 3 man midfield (to accommodate Hucks) and since other teams invariably have 4 or 5 there we are always outnumbered in the area where we should be playing short passes. We therefore have to bypass midfield with long balls to get it to the three guys we have hanging about up front waiting for the ball.
