Regarding which, I entirely agree

I suspect it's actually always been like this. It's just that the sums involved are more astronomical than ever nowadays - and that 24/7 media means we're a lot more aware of it. Despite that media, nothing changes though. Power corrupts; human nature will always be greedy.
