PM WrothRunners - Advice please!

I'm 5ft10in and weigh just under 18st and I currently plod my way around the local roads quite comfortably in a very modest 12:30 mile pace, however I would like (if possible) to increase my pace a bit. With this in mind I headed out this evening with the intention of trying to go a bit faster, I ended up however doing the first mile in 10:45 and damn nearly killed myself.

Since I started running again earlier this year my longest run is approx 8 miles / 13 km and I am due to do a 10k in November and a half marathon in May, and I would also like to do a full marathon in 2018. I am confident that if I continued my current running then I would be fine with the distances, however I would like to be able to go a bit faster.

With this in mind, should my pace increase naturally if I keep putting the miles in without worrying about time or should I try and concentrate on upping my time? Perhaps at the expense of distance for a while?

Any tips or testimonials of what worked for you would be gratefully appreciated!
