...and say it *may* have come across slightly stronger in the English than the original German. Another option might simply be that club "stood firm". (Who'd be a translator!?)

When it comes down to it, I think basically he just meant that we wouldn't let him go. I agree it did seem a bit incongruous in the context, though, which suggests that perhaps it wasn't intended to come across so strong.
