And either you risk being left with a very unhappy player, or even (eg in the case of Ruddy?) that you might think you owe him the chance to move on. Perhaps if he's been a loyal player in the past and given good service etc. (In the latter case, there's a risk to *not* behaving like that - that your other players see it, and think "there's no point showing this club any loyalty - they won't ever return the favour in future...")
