If she'd been competing 20 years ago, she'd have been a national hero a la Roger Black. Instead, purely because of the era she's in, she'll probably return to anonymity when she gets back to the UK. Which given her achievements - nothing more could've been asked, or was possible - is just nuts.

Also about 20 years ago, I remember reading a piece in The Times which basically said: "Our problem is we compete in more sports than almost anyone else, but spread ourselves far too thinly and have no oversight over antiquated governance structures". The difference which targeting funding on specific sports has made is, well, mindblowing.
