I'm easily confused

Last week it seemed that it was absolute madness to spend two and sixpence on an ancient striker.

This week the club has no ambition because it won't pay two and sixpence for same striker and we are therefore more doomed than a doomed person in a very doomed place.

Which is correct? Are we wise to not buy or foolish to not buy. Please show your workings.
