The problem is, any form of freedom of movement will be seen as

a betrayal to the vast majority of those who voted leave.
As you say, we'll have to wait and see but, even as a remainer, I think we should just get on with it at full speed, like pulling a bad tooth. Get the pain over and done with and then see what we can salvage.
Fortunately for me, like many of the leavers, I am no longer in the job market, I now don't use much fuel and grow most of our own fruit and veg so, to an extent, am insulated from the effects.
