my point is that they are best achieved if implemented over a large area (a small area attempting it will get picked off by the larger better-performing area - this is effectively the idea behind Marx's observation that socialism would not work if it was only in one country). If the UK tried to go 'socialist' on its own, inside or outside the EU, it would have no chance of success, as discovered by Mitterand in France. However if it was the whole EU moving in that direction the odds improve enormously...
