The point about being more approachable is a good one. I did a solo jaunt to South Africa post uni and stuck around in the same place for over a month. Soon taken under the wing of a couple of the backpacker hostel owners as I was alone and they knew I was hanging around for a while (rather than being one of the transient types only there for a couple of days) so got brought into their social groups and had a pretty good time/got taken to places I'd have never known about otherwise.
