when we are on the brink of administration.

I don't see why people think getting relegated will increase McNally's bonus - we will do a lot better financially by staying up. But his job becomes a LOT more difficult if we get relegated. Lots of teams have suffered financial meltdown after relegation, so paying him a bonus for avoiding that is a small price to pay.
