id recommend the g over the e every day.

the 3rd gen gets you faster spec, more memory if you go for the 16gb, better camera and a MUCH better screen.

they are very capable phones for the money and as said a 3rd gen g should get android m.

an alternative is the vodafone smart ultra 6. this defo wont get updated but should get you 2 years use.

really good spec (better than the g), plus gets you more ram and better processor. can be had for near ?100 on vodafone or if you go online you could get a very cheap tariff (try searching on hotukdeals for some examples)

other decent phone in same bracket is the m4 aqua by sony. decent reviews and spec.
