of a very large (though rapidly diminishing) political party comprising many people who were upset to see him refuse to sing (or, if you believe the new shadow chancellor, which I do not, to be so overcome by emotion that he couldn't quite get the words out ...). It's one thing to be a stroppy backbencher, quite another to lead and represent a party with many members with pretty diverse views.
