Ignorant/naive people fear the unknown

and so they attack them or try to make out it's wrong (eg homosexuality etc) because they are scared of confronting their own fears on the matter, in case (just in case) they might be "like that". So it's much to make degrading jokes about stuff they fear instead to keep them behind armour which makes them feel safer.
