but their was always a perception that in the event of a f**k up, the senior officers would look after themselves first and the guys on the street second, so long as in doing that, they weren't compromised personally.
However, back in the early 90's freemasonry was common among senior ranks in the Police, so that ethos may explain some of what I've said above.
Being a cop and a 'mason' isn't nearly so common now and is actively discouraged in my old force.
