Me Ma's Dell (dual core) went to a standstill with the disc aging/dying

She got everything off it on a stick, and then bought another machine. Hers literally started up and then would freeze for 10 minutes, and then would respond but then freeze again

I trialled a version of Linux on it (Fedora), as it loaded onto the hard disc a pop up came up and said something like "Hard disc failing"

I put ubuntu 13.10 (version at the time), and it lasted a year an a half on it

Chromebooks are linux as far as I'm aware. Once you've got your data off. Buy a ?1 Ubuntu 14.10 disc off ebay, and you'll get a couple of years more out of it
