I think you're right about the cameras picking more up now, and also with referees much more prepared to give red cards than 30 years ago. You can't aim a sly punch now or rake your studs down someone's calf without getting away with it; so the natural evolution to gain an advantage is diving and putting pressure on the ref - things that can work with no risk of being sent off.
