I would rather go to prison for a year than to pay someone 17.000 pounds

At least in prison I wouldn't have to work, get free meals, get to watch TV without paying the BBC licence, go to the gym without paying a membership fee and I get to meet "interesting" people from all around the world and if I get attacked by someone I will get thousands of pounds in compensation. If u really think about it, a prison life is actually alot better than the outside world.
