It might seem like an over-reaction, but I think it's that kind of shock treatment that's needed to rid English football of the final remnants of racism. And given how sickened I felt when I saw that video this morning, I think it would be justified. It would show society at large that football is serious about tackling the problem, and it would also set an example to other European football organisations who are pathetically weak in the face of racist abuse.
Whatever the response, I think it should be self-censure by the FA. We need to demonstrate moral leadership because the thought of UEFA sitting in judgement given their terrible record when it comes to punishing such abuse is abhorrent.
Of course we must also do more to increase diversity in football (especially among managers), but in the short-term I think a short, sharp shock is needed.
