Agreed, watch out for the tourist traps though

I went a couple of years ago and ended up in a right dodgy hotel in a neighbourhood called Aksaray, which is basically a red light district. I am going back this summer for a friend's wedding and he recommended Besiktas as a good place to stay. Kadikoy is also supposed to be nice, but it's a bit far from the main sites on the European side. Also, be careful of the rip-off merchants in the Grand Bazaar - I know two different people who've been conned there. But on the whole it's a fantastic city and I can't wait to go back.
