seems to me as if you're giving them license to take advantage

at present they pay you for what you do, right? If they don't take advantage and send you less work for X amount of money, then they're going to feel like it's a s**t deal and pull out anyway.

If I were you I'd find more clients since it's clearly not a good idea to depend on someone who can easily tell you to bugger off with no advance warning.

I also work freelance so I know all about feast or famine. Just manage your money and make sure you earn enough on average and you'll be fine. Key to that is having a good range of clients though
