Wrath winter tyre advice wanted...........

I'm thinking of buying a set of winter tyres for my Audi A4 Allroad.
It goes without saying that they offer much better grip, particularly on ice and snow, which we have plenty of in Scotland just now.
Do any wrathers have experience of using winter tyres and if I leave them on the car all year round, do they wear significantly quicker than normal road tyres?
