Right. I keep forgetting to ask this, and this might be the wrong time, due to

inappropriate personnel, but I'm going to ask now, and maybe repost during the day too.

I have never really got on with whisky, ever, but I suspect I'm Doing Whisky Wrong. So I'm planning on getting a proper bottle for Xmas. You know, a proper, relatively spendy single malt.

Is there a variety that would be better for a beginner? You'll note I'm not asking you what your favourite malt is, although that's inevitably where this will go.
