He may have paid for him doing some driving, but at that point didn't he thing the taxi driver was a victim too?

We're both speculating, but I think if there were any basis in the suggestion that he handed over significant cash then there would likely still be a case to answer.

I don't agree though, that this is anything like Ched Evans. The point of discussion in that scenario is whether the evidence warrants a conviction. In this case, there is no evidence. There's some odd behaviour, that's true, but beyond that there's nothing more than the extremely unreliable testimony of someone that has been convicted for his role in the crime, which he apparently contradicted when talking to someone else in prison.
