Agreed - I wanted him to expand on that

I wonder if it was something like - changes in the climate made evolution go into overdrive - only the strongest / smartest survived, and passed their genes on. But wanted to know.

In the end, they put a physicist in charge of a programme fundamentally about human evolution. Not surprisngly, he was more interested in, and knowledgeable about, the slightly tangential physics stuff (hence his equations in the van etc)...
