However as you say, credit scores are affected by any debt, albeit not necessarily that badly, particularly if it is shortlived.
Basically any debt that is not secured (ie a mortgage which is secured against a house) is unsecured - overdrafts, credit cards, car loans etc - and can affect your credit rating.
