...about players continuing, and about heading the old ball repeatedly over years being potentially damaging - I don't think Dunc's dementia has been directly linked (my father and grandfather both have/had dementia and neither headed footballs) though, but it's certainly plausible.

These days the balls are not a lot more than beach balls though. It's not clear to me how you actually play football without heading it.
