has he been buying stuff on eBay recently?

If so, maybe check the seller of those items to see if they've sold an iPad to someone else and put the wrong address on it.

I'm a bit paranoid, but I'm not sure I'd trust using it unless you can wipe it of everything in case its some eleaborate scam to cream off his online banking details etc.
