Excellent point well made. We chose badly and then lingered on that choice.

Clearly, in the position we were in then we were able to choose a much more competent and established manager and should have done so.

I dread to think of all the supreme candidates whose applications were turned aside for Hughton's meagre CV. To think of qualified people who wanted the job but then never heard back, while we pursued Hughton is quite upsetting.
