Vermaelen is one of those players who make those around him look worse because he has very little organisational or positional sense. He attracted positive press his first season at Arsenal largely because he scored a surprising amount of goals for a CB but since those have turned out to be one of those freak coincidences he has looked poor. Arsenal generally look much better defensively when he is not playing.
Barcelona paying over the odds for Arsenal players is a bit of a club tradition (Hleb and Song are the worst examples of this)
