Thanks Yellowman. I think my grandad was with the cavalry - at least we know he had to

look after horses. He was from Liverpool and we found army records for two possibles from the Liverpool regiment where he was from. I need to research to see if they had a cavalry section.

Thanks for the info about operation Neptune. It's so frustrating none of us can remember the name of the minesweeper he was on! My sister even went with him to some 50th anniversary celebrations in London!

They were very helpful today and suggested getting in touch with a veterans website and the Naval records in Portsmouth so I will keep digging.

I was thinking, the message from this should be to listen carefully to your elders but then, will we ever have such amazing stories to tell?
