I would say we've possibly been playing better this season than in two previous ones

with the crucial exception of execution in front of goal (which is something that is actualoly out of the manager's control). We definitely now have much more ability to control a game from midfield (at least when three of Fer, Tettey, Johnson & Howson are available).
My main issue with Hughton this year has been him actually trying to be too positive with the doomed 4-4-2 experiments (notably the Fulham/Newcastle home games) but the injuries to Howson & Tettey partly forced that on him.
He has some flaws and makes some mistakes but he does know how to get a team organised and the players appear tpo love him.
We could get better than Hughton but we could also clearly get worse. Right now under difficult circumstances (injuries, players making individual errors) he is keeping his cool and doing an OK job.
