Just had a big argument with someone in my office who is adanemt we should be playing 442 in every home game as we need wins. I said you simply can't play 442 in every home game and that we have to change depending on the opposition. We simply can't go 4 against 5 in midfield against the stronger teams as we get completely overrun and end up with so little of the ball. I made the point that I dread to think what will happen with we play 442 against man city a week on Saturday.
Last night was a prime example for me where we were completely over run in midfield and we should have matched them formation wise. In my eyes our coaching staff should have been well aware that Newcastle play a fluid 451 (when defending) & 433 (when attacking). Much like they should have known that Everton play the same formation yet in the away game up there we for some reason went 2 up top.
My biggest gripe with Hughton is that when his formation is not working he seems to have a complete inability to spot it and change things during the course of the game. For example last night he had to have been able to see after 20 mins that they were winking everything in midfield and that Ben Arfa had so much freedom that he was destroying us.
