But in my day, the rules of engagement were that it was lawful to fire if a warning had been given twice and a threat to life was imminent. I am thinking of the para Lee clegg who shot and killed a joy rider who had failed to stop at a check point in NI....

The definition of 'fire' is to shoot to kill, warning shots were not permitted (the two army corporals who were murdered by a raging mob after accidently driving into an ira funeral pricession made this fatal mistake).
