You're right. The 3 month warranty does not have to be offered and some suspect

it used as a bit of a red herring by dealers to confuse the consumer so that they don't persue their statutory rights.

If a fault develops in the first 6 months, the onus is on the dealer to prove that the fault was not present at the time of sale.
