When I read that first line...

I was thinking, mine only ever brings home dead animals, never a mangled leg. It's always a relief when they return - except, as once with me, where one of ours had been hit by a car but decided rather than die by the roadside he would crawl home and then peg it after a night in the pet hospital while running up a huge bill.
