I don't think it's impossible, just improbable. Ideally he needed to seek help before it got so hand of hand, but it's difficult to develop an alternative coping strategy (to alcohol) at this stage of life. The fame doesn't help in a lot of ways, although it would almost certainly give him better treatment if he did want it (funding, sporting chance clinic etc). Many people have very similar problems without being famous, unfortunately.
