Sounds like your mother board has been an issue the whole time

Shutting down and restarting should be the same thing

Shutting down just allows everything to stop, cool, down etc

Restarting is still a fresh boot, but the machine never powered down.

If on restart the machine crashes, then it sounds like it really needs that total shut down to work again later

When you first posted it was the usbs, I didn't want to use the dredded "it's probably the motherboard", cos there's no ultimate fix if it is, other to get another motherboard

You'll probably get what you get out of it, and accept it's slowly on it's way out
