They gave me the spiel about my Microsoft computer being infected. It was when I revealed I had a Mac that they hung up.
It is a scam. They want to take remote access of your machine to "clean it up", but actually will steal all personal info from off of out of it. Thieving cnuts.
Trouble is, as they're calling internationally, there's not a darn thing the TPS can do about it. Anyone calling from outside the UK is not bound by the TPS t&c's.
I have caller display on my landline. I no longer answer any calls to witheld, blocked, international, or any unrecognised numbers. If the call is legit, they can leave a message and you can return the call.
It's good practise not to answer unrecognised numbers these days, usually if they don't get an answer within a few times they give up. I moved two years ago and had a brand new landline number set up. Within weeks, I was being plagued by sales calls etc (again despite being registered to TPS). I'd guess that over half of all calls to my landline at one stage were unsolicited cold-calling bastards. I stopped answering the landline to all but recognised numbers, and I'm now down to one or two calls per week that I won't answer. The latest being a Blackburn number (I looked it up on the web) who's ringing around everyone in the UK and either hanging up on answer, or trying to sell boiler servicing warranties.
In summary, screen your calls Old Man!
