then there was just a crescendo of opinion against him when we built a team which was arguably our best ever including home grown talent, and young enough to build on, and then sold them all sometimes behind the manager's backs. A lot of crowd favourites there as well, and he'd already done it previously with the likes of Fleck, Gordon, Drinkell et all.
He then famously told us that if Chris Sutton was not there at the end of the season, neither would he be. Sutton was sold, but then also Fox and Ekoku etc and we got relegated.
Still it was tense but not at tipping point and he placated the fans a little by convincing O'Neill to join but when he lied to the public and pissed off O'Neill about Windass that was it. Also at the time strong suggestions of some income "disappearing"
